Playing Doctor

Today we were taught how to write out prescriptions on our own little pad of scripts. It made me sit in awe of Drs who have to know dosages and proper dosing and do math in their head at lightning speed. (ie Dr T...I miss you). Because we were in charge of who and what we prescribed I took it as an opportunity to use it as my own personal therapy.

I started with writing a script for my table mate who will not stop talking. Diazepam. ahhhhh!

I wrote Governor Butch Otter a prescription for hydrocholothiazide, a high powered diuretic. Perhaps he will finally go home.

I wrote several scripts for my blog bully. Olanzepine and Campral. If there was a drug to change unkind people at the molecular level I would have thrown that in for good measure. Alas, after thumbing through my 3000 page drug book, it doesn't seem to exist. The Genome Project promises to unlock all sorts of character traits and perhaps one day we can use gene therapy to soften the hearts of (wo) men and rid the desire for self-entitled nastiness.

In honor of my friend Brian Levitt who died 18 years ago from AIDS, I wrote a prescription for Stavudine. One of the many new drugs we have to help people live with their HIV infections, sometimes for decades now. Brian lasted only 3 years from diagnosis to the grave.

And finally I wrote a script for allpurinol for a fictional Ralph A. Lott. The official directions for allpurinol is to take one pill po every hr until you vomit. It doesn't sound like much fun but I hear Gout is a nasty, painful condition.

Alls Well That Ends Well

The Infamous Wedding

If you read my blog regularly you will remember the horror story .

The bride sent me this today. She looks as stunning as I remember. The flower girl is soooo photogenic and the video turned out wonderfully. I admit that I still get all emotional thinking that it should have been Emma but its hard not to get overwhelmed by the "Awww" factor.

Congrats J and K!

"Pulling a Clavin"

Hello, my name is nina and I am a pseudo-know-it-all. It has been almost 2 hours since I last pulled a Clavin. I am already seeking my next Clavin when my partner returns home from work. I am armed with the condensed version of rigor mortis and will force her to sit, over dinner or perhaps a rerun of House, and act intensely interested.

I.CANT.STOP.MYSELF

It started innocently enough, I made the decision to go back to school, then friends and family began to encourage me, plying me with various and sundry stationery items. I got my first taste of Clavinism when I presented my first paper in Ethics class. By the time I left my General Ed behind I was shamelessly telling anecdotal stories about the previous presenter's topic on my way to the podium.

It has spread to my blog, message boards and even facebook has not escaped my sickness. I don't know if there is any help for me. I am destined to become an old boorish woman.

Home to an Empty House

Well okay, when I opened the door I was greeted by 3 wiggly tails and bursting bladders. Not exactly what one can call "alone" but there is an obvious "emptiness". My girl is back to work at what I will refer to as, LAE.

For 6 months, I have come home to her every day after school. Often, we would nap, curled up together. I already miss her.

Desperately Seeking This...

If anyone within the sight of my writing knows where I can get my hands on decals/stickers of this image will get my complete set of Wizard of Oz porcelain dolls. Lordy, how gay is that?

If I have frightened you but you still know where the stickers are, please know you are in no danger and I will refrain from sending said dolls you and offer instead a sincere THANK YOU instead.

Christ Has Risen!

I know, its not like me to go all LBJ on ya all. So please forgive. We attended our first Easter service, my FIRST Easter service this morning. It was a true celebration with laughter and applause and smiles. Something, coming from LDS services, is out of my realm of experience.

There was an Easter Egg hunt before the services. Utter mayhem. Wonderful, joyful mayhem. The weather is divine today... no pun intended.

(I know LBJ doesn't control the weather)

The children, our children, decorated the cross with flowers during the beginning of the service. We brought our own bouquet of roses especially for the event. My girls were so at home and happy, dancing around the table with Pastor Kim.

If you have read any of my musings on Sundays after I return from the "big top" you will know that I have a tenuous relationship with LBJ. I have said that he left me when I left my old life. Pastor Kim today presented another option. Perhaps, as the women did in the gospel of Mark, running from the resurrection with fear and confusion, I ran from the face of God. With my obviously, highly, socially unacceptable self, I hid in shame? In fear? Rejecting God before he got around to rejecting me? Eh, I don't know. I wonder if like a horoscope, I find explanations inside words that could be true for anyone who wanted them to be. We all want the custom made epiphany. Whether it come from within or from a separate source. Perhaps I am looking for a reason where no reason lies. Perhaps.

Christ Has Risen Indeed!

...OH! And the Easter Bunny came whilst we were out!

doggie treats... not chocolate!

and now my love and I settle in to watch Hamlet and smell the corned beef slowly cooking in a pool of onions, carrots, potatoes and french onion soup...

"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man."

A cavern. In the middle, a cauldron. Then thunder and 3 witches enter....

Thrice the brinded cat hath mew'd

Thrice and once the hedge-pig whined

Harpier cries, “’Tis time, ’tis time.”

Round about the cauldron go:
In the poison'd entrails throw.
Toad, that under cold stone
Days and nights has thirty-one
Swelter'd venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i’ the charmed pot.

Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg and howlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf,
Witch's mummy, maw and gulf
Of the ravin'd salt-sea shark,
Root of hemlock digg'd i’ the dark,
Liver of blaspheming Jew,
Gall of goat and slips of yew
Sliver'd in the moon's eclipse,
Nose of Turk and Tartar's lips,
Finger of birth-strangled babe
Ditch-deliver'd by a drab,
Make the gruel thick and slab.
Add thereto a tiger's chaudron,
For the ingredients of our cauldron.

Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble

Cool it with a baboon's blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.

O, well done! I commend your pains,
And everyone shall share i’ the gains.
And now about the cauldron sing,
Like elves and fairies in a ring,
Enchanting all that you put in.

Happy Easter!

Easter's Dark Secret

The way we celebrate Easter is rather bizarre if you think about it. We grow up thinking that its a day when the Easter Bunny comes and hides eggs and you get to gorge yourself on Easter candy before breakfast. And then as an after thought we say, "Oh its also Christ's resurrection". It is obviously a strange pairing of Pagan and Christian rituals.

Either way, it only takes one pass down the Easter aisle at Walmart to see that both Pagan and Christian arms of the Easter candy frenzy have blatantly excluded one of their own. I ask you, where is the dark chocolate? I have searched the rows of chocolate bunnies to find milk chocolate as far as the eye can see. How I dream of the joy of biting the ears off of a dark chocolate bunny.

The bitterness and sweetness all rolled up into one big bite. To me this is the perfect symbol for Easter.

I WANT A DARK CHOCOLATE BUNNY!!

Wedding Day Blues

It seems every time I post about people in my life behaving badly, I always end up saying "I am astonished at..." Being hit upside the head is getting old though. If I give that up then I have to come to grips with the fact that people will continuously disappoint me and I just need to expect their bad behavior. I give up believing people are really good at heart. It makes me sad just saying it. And angry at them for my loss of innocence.

A good friend is getting married. She has been planning her day for over a year. She asked me and my two little ones to participate in her day. I was excited and the girls were ecstatic. Hannah was to be the gift attendant and Emma the flower girl and I, the bridesmaid. The last wedding I was involved with was my own in 1998. We have been all a buzz. We went shopping a few weeks ago to get the girls their dresses. They both looked like princesses.

I had things all worked out with their father back in February. Then earlier this week I reminded him and all hell broke loose. Because the wedding falls on his weekend. Now remember, he knew it would back in February and he spoke of how excited the girls must be. He tried to dictate the girls availability this weekend, saying that they couldn't go to the rehearsal and only a few hours during the wedding day and he wanted them back long before the wedding was to take place. Needless to say, the bride ended up with $200 worth of dresses and no one to wear them. I felt like dying, having to tell the bride what my exhusband was pulling. Embarrassment and heartsickness all rolled up into one. The bride herself went to him begging him not to screw her over. In which he replied, "I'll think about it." Ummm, huh? He will think about keeping a commitment for the girls? What makes it even worse for the bride is that she has to continue to work with him. Both girls cried when I told them their father won't let them go and Emma was especially worried about the bride. Hannah asked him why. To which he had no response.

We just got home from the rehearsal tonight. After a river of tears from the bride, she managed to find another little girl to stand in for Emma. I am not sure if she has been able to find a gift attendent though. As we ran through the practice runs I couldn't help but tear up watching the flower girl waltzing down the aisle tossing rose petals at the brides feet. All I could see is how beautiful my Em would have been. They should have been able to participate in such a wonderful part of many-a-woman's journey in life. The pomp, the circustances. They were to be fussed over at the hair salon and wander around in a sea full of excitement. But its his weekend so...

It is becoming very clear that my life and all its particulars will always have to fall on "my weekend" in order to allow my girls to be any part of it. I still wonder what type of thrill he got from pulling his girls from a wedding committment. I hope he has an explanation for them. I am all out of excuses for his behavior. I spend most of the Christmas season explaining that Jewish people are just as good to be friends with as other kids who do believe in Christmas. And I am still trying to explain the them that jesus doesn't give personal invitations to a select few to break Lent just because you are on vacation. But I suppose if a promise to God can be broken so easily, a promise to a bride is an easy one.
